Day 1

Visit Addis Ababa: start your day looking down on the city from Entoto Mountain. Then, continue south to Addis Ababa via Shiro Meda, the city’s largest market for traditional clothes. Then, you will have a chance to explore the national museum (home of Lucy) and the ethnographic museum (the former palace of Haileselassie), learn more about orthodox religion at Kiddist Maryam, Kidane Mihret and Kiddest Selassie churches. Your final visit is “mercato” - Africa’s largest open-air market. In the afternoon, flight to Mekele. Overnight in Mekele.

Day 2

After breakfast, depart for Dallol, which at 116m below sea level is the lowest point on the African continent. Walk around this area to admire the stunning landscape, the ground many shades of red, yellow and orange from the hot water, acids and minerals spurting up from the ground. Overnight in the village of Hamed Ela.

Day 3

In the morning, continue your trip to Lake Asale, which is the salt lake from which the Afar nomads extract salt. You will witness (and even try) their laborious task of removing salt from the ground as hundreds of camels relax. Transfer to Erta Ale: dinner in the lower campsite. After dinner, walk to the volcano crater to spend the night on its ridge.

Day 4

Walk back to the lower campsite for breakfast. Drive to Wukro. Overnight in Wukro.

Day 5

In the morning, start exploring the rock-hewn churches with Wukro Chirkos. On the road to Hawzien, stop to visit Abreha We Atsebeha, Mikael Minda’e and Debre Tsion Abuna Abraham. Overnight in Hawzien.

Day 6

After breakfast, visit Maryam Korkor before taking the road to Adigrat. In the afternoon, explore the Teka Tesfai cluster and 2 of its churches (Petros & Paulos and Medhane Alem Adi Kasho). Overnight in Adrigrat

Day 7

Drive to Axum. On the way, stop to visit the monastery of Debre Damo (for men only! To reach the top of the hill, they will need to haul themselves up with the strength of their arms) and to see the ruins of the stone temple of Yeha. Overnight in Axum.

Day 8

Explore Axum: visit of the stela field, the Axum museum, Mai Shum (the Queen of Sheba’s swimming pool), the cathedral of Tsion Maryam, King Ezana’s Park and King Basen’s Tomb, Kaleb Tomb and Gebre Meskiel, Dongar and the Gudit Stela Field (Queen of Sheba’s palace). Take a chance to enjoy some of the best Ethiopian honey and visit the traditional basket market. Overnight in Axum.

Day 9

Morning flight to Addis Ababa. On Option, depending on international flight schedule, more visits of the capital city can be arranged as well as a great diner in a traditional restaurant with dancing shows. Transfer to airport.
