  • Meet the Abyssinian Wolf and other endemic species populating the park
  • 9 days trekking in the Bale Mountains National Park, all the way up to the Mount Tullu Deemtu, second highest spot in Ethiopia
  • Explore the Harenna forest and its fairytale atmosphere

Day 1

Depart south from Addis Ababa via Butajira. On the way you will visit the archeological sites of Tiya (ancient stelae field and UNESCO World Heritage Site), Adadi Maryam (a rock-hewn church similar to those in Lalibela) and Melka Kunture (pre-historic tool-making site). Then, continue south to Dinsho, where the Bale Mountains National Park headquarters is located. Overnight in Dinsho.

Day 2

Today, you will start your trekking by ascending from Dinsho (3100m) south to Sodota Campsite (3500m) via Web Valley. Here, there is a good chance of spotting the endemic and rarely seen Abyssinian Wolf. You will then cross a natural stone bridge over the Danka River and stop at Finch'Abera Falls before reaching the Sodota Camp. Overnight camping in Sodota. (5 - 6 hours trek)

Day 3

By continuing hiking through the breathtaking landscapes of the Web Valley, climb southward to Keyrensa Campsite (3750m), a rocky area frequented by rock hyrax. You will also bypass Mount Weshema (4010m) while observing many endemic birds as well as the Abyssinian Wolf. Overnight camping in Keyrensa. (4-5 hours trek)

Day 4

Today, you will head southeast ascending to Rafu Campsite (3990m) via the Rafu Valley, making a short diversion to a spectacular lava flow. Passing the Harenna Escarpment, you will enjoy the view of the dense forest at the bottom of the mountains. Overnight at Rafu Campsite. (5-6 hours trek))

Day 5

Today, you will hike to the second densely populated forest in Ethiopia – Harenna Forest. You will take an excursion to the waterfalls by the forest, as you continue walking through the giant trees that house various types of baboons and monkeys. Luckily, you may also spot the few, rarely seen, leopards and lions that reside in the forest. Then you will stop at the village Rira to enjoy the traditional coffee ceremony of the locals. Overnight camping at Rira Village. (6-7 hours trek)

Day 6

In the morning, start trekking to Umburi Campsite which is close to Mount Tullu Deemtu. On the way, you will cross the Harenna escarpment. As enjoyable the greenery is all the way, the campsite which is found on a plateau is also equally interesting. Overnight camping at Umburi Campsite. ( 5-6 hours trek)

Day 7

Cross the Sanetti Plateau eastward to Garba Guracha Campsite (3950m) overlooking the Garba Guracha Pond which is another residence for the Ethiopian Wolf and the Abyssinian Hare. Overnight at Garba Guracha Campsite. (4-5 hours trek)

Day 8

Ascend Bale’s highest peak Tullu Deemtu (and the second highest mountain in Ethiopia at 4377m) via the Crane Lakes as a full day hike. Overnight at Garba Guracha Campsite. (6-7 hours trek)

Day 9

Divert to the peak of Mount Batu (4203m) in the morning enjoying the various wildlife. You will still have the chance to observe the wolf of Abyssinia in its natural habitat, as well as the endemic birds of the park. Then head to Worgona campsite. Overnight at Worgona Campsite. (6-7 hours trek)

Day 10
